How I Stay Healthy While Traveling

Share:

I used to think staying healthy while traveling meant trying to stick to my routine as closely as possible.

If I missed workouts, ate differently, or indulged more than usual, I’d come home feeling like I needed to “make up for it.” Thankfully, I’ve moved away from that mindset.

Travel is one of my favorite things, and I never want wellness to take away from that. Instead, I’ve learned that a few simple habits can help me feel energized, support my digestion, and keep me feeling like myself, without missing out on everything that makes traveling so special.

These are the habits I come back to every trip.

1. I find ways to move that fit the trip.

I don’t put pressure on myself to find a gym every day.

Some mornings that looks like a quick workout before breakfast. Other days it’s walking through a new city, swimming in the ocean, or going for a hike.

Movement becomes part of the experience instead of another thing to check off my list.

I’ve found that when I stop thinking of movement as a workout and start seeing it as a way to experience a place, it becomes something I genuinely look forward to.

2. I still prioritize protein and fiber.

I know that when I eat enough protein and fiber, I simply feel better. My energy is more stable, my digestion stays on track, and I don’t end every day feeling overly hungry or sluggish.

Whether it’s eggs at breakfast, fresh seafood, or adding vegetables to my meal, I try to include something nourishing alongside all of the fun foods I’m enjoying.

3. I fully indulge… and actually enjoy it.

One of the biggest mindset shifts I’ve made is letting go of the guilt. If I’m in Italy, I’m ordering the pasta. If I find an incredible bakery, I’m getting the pastry. If there’s gelato after dinner, I’m absolutely saying yes.

Travel is meant to be experienced, and food is such a beautiful part of that.

I’ve also learned that constantly stressing over every meal isn’t healthy either. Feeling relaxed, present, and enjoying the moment supports your nervous system in a way that perfection never will.

One meal never defines your health, just like one workout never does.

4. I eat what’s local and in season.

This is one of my favorite parts of traveling. Fresh fruit from the market. Local seafood. Seasonal vegetables. Fresh bread. Incredible olive oil.

Instead of chasing the “healthiest” option on the menu, I lean into foods that are fresh, local, and in season. Not only do they taste incredible, but they naturally make me feel good too.

5. I pack a few staples that help me feel my best.

There are a few things that always make it into my suitcase.

  • Electrolytes
  • Digestive enzymes
  • A probiotic

Long travel days, changes in routine, and different foods can all take a toll on your digestion and hydration.

These aren’t things I pack because they help me feel my best so that I can enjoy every part of my trip.

6. I walk after dinner whenever I can.

This is probably the easiest habit I keep while traveling. Instead of heading straight back after dinner, we’ll usually wander for another 20 or 30 minutes.

It’s one of my favorite ways to see a city at night, but it’s also amazing for digestion, helps support balanced blood sugar after a bigger meal, and leaves me feeling so much lighter before bed.

7. I recreate the feeling, not the routine.

My routine is never going to look exactly the same when I’m traveling, and I’ve stopped expecting it to. Instead of trying to recreate every habit from home, I focus on recreating how I want to feel.

Maybe that means moving my body in the morning.

Maybe it’s taking my time over breakfast outside, staying hydrated, getting plenty of sunshine, or doing my skincare before bed.

The habits themselves might change, but the intention stays the same.

The Bottom Line

For me, wellness isn’t something I pause when I travel, and it’s not something I obsess over either.

It’s simply the little choices that help me feel energized, confident, and present enough to enjoy every moment.

Because the goal isn’t to come home feeling like you need to get back on track. The goal is to come home with incredible memories you’ll never forget and a body that still feels cared for along the way. xx
